University of Medicine and Health Sciences St Kitts Campus
The University of Medicine and Health Sciences (also known as UMHS) is a for-profit medical school located in Basseterre, Saint Kitts in the Caribbean. UMHS confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The university also has a 5th semester campus in Portland, Maine and an administrative office in New York, New York.
Our goal is to provide students with an education comparable to schools in the United States. We maintain the highest of standards, and recruit qualified and credentialed faculty primarily from the United States. Our faculty love to teach and are dedicated and committed to your success. Class size is purposefully kept small so that we can provide students with a personalized education. We have a low student to faculty ratio, and have established a number of programs to minimize academic attrition and ensure success. In fact, our attrition rate in 2012 was 4%.
We offer a traditional medical school curriculum integrating clinical material into the Basic Science curriculum beginning in the first semester. While in St. Kitts, students will be exposed to a variety of clinical settings including community health centers, local and virtual hospitals, including access to our modern skills laboratories. Throughout the Basic Science Program we prepare students to sit for Step 1 of the USMLE. Shelf examinations, developed by the National Board of Medical Examiners, are similar in scope and style to the USMLE. We have incorporated these examinations into our curriculum.
UMHS has one of the most state of the art campuses in the Caribbean. Our standards were extremely high, and we spared no expense in developing our facilities. Our modern wireless campus includes a 11,000 square-foot state of the art anatomy building that is a model for most US medical school. We are the only Caribbean medical school that has a 24-bed virtual hospital with more than 20 high and low fidelity human simulators. The campus contains a number of classrooms, multipurpose laboratories, an auditorium, and a large library and learning resource center with over 60 computers for student use. All of our classrooms and laboratories are equipped with the latest in audio-visual equipment to enhance the quality of education. I urge you to view our video gallery on this web site to obtain further information on our facilities.
